In his account, Epiphanius states that:

The Questions of Mary (also called The Great Questions of Mary) survives only in hostile quotations, mainly from Epiphanius of Salamis in his Panarion (late 4th century). He cites it as a “heretical” Gnostic gospel in which Jesus allegedly reveals secret mysteries to Mary. One of the most controversial claims Epiphanius preserves is that it describes a ritual where Jesus performs a sexual act with Mary Magdalene on a mountain, and has her consume his semen. According to Epiphanius, this was used to justify sacred sexual rites among certain Gnostic groups such as the Borborites/Phibionites.

The preserved fragment reads (Panarion 8:2):

8:2 For in the so-called ‘Greater Questions of Mary’—there are also ‘Lesser’ ones forged by them—they claim that he reveals it to her after taking her aside on the mountain, praying, producing a woman from his side, beginning to have sex with her, and then partaking of his emission, if you please, to show that ‘Thus we must do, that we may live.’

This shocking description was almost certainly written down by critics to portray the sects as scandalous. Still, some scholars suggest it reflects a real esoteric teaching where semen was regarded as a sacred elixir of life—a notion echoed in other Gnostic, Tantric, and alchemical traditions, where sexual fluids are treated as carriers of divine power or gnosis.

The Questions of Mary, preserved only in Epiphanius’ hostile report, describes Jesus taking Mary up a mountain, producing semen, and having her consume it, saying, “Thus must we do, that we may live” (Panarion 26.8). While likely polemical distortion, it may echo a genuine Gnostic “Bridal Chamber” mystery, where sexual union and the sharing of vital fluids symbolized divine gnosis, the reunion of spirit and matter, and the soul’s ascent to eternal life.

Epiphanius writes the following about the Gnostics, and this is our only source for the contents (Panarion, 26.8.1 – 26.9.5)

8:1 And they too have lots of books. They publish certain ‘Questions of Mary’; but others offer many books about the Ialdabaoth we spoke of, and in the name of Seth. They call others ‘Apocalypses of Adam’ and have ventured to compose other Gospels in the names of the disciples, and are not ashamed to say that our Saviour and Lord himself, Jesus Christ, revealed this obscenity.

8:2 For in the so-called ‘Greater Questions of Mary’—there are also ‘Lesser’ ones forged by them—they claim that he reveals it to her after taking her aside on the mountain, praying, producing a woman from his side, beginning to have sex with her, and then partaking of his emission, if you please, to show that ‘Thus we must do, that we may live.’

8:3 And when Mary was alarmed and fell to the ground, he raised her up and said to her, ‘O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?’

8:4 And they say that this is the meaning of the saying in the Gospel, ‘If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe the heavenly things?’ and so of, ‘When ye see the Son of Man ascending up where he was before’—in other words, when you see the emission being partaken of where it came from.

8:5 And when Christ said, ‘Except ye eat my flesh and drink my blood,’ and the disciples were disturbed and replied, ‘Who can hear this?’40 they say his saying was about the dirt.

8:6 And this is why they were disturbed and fell away; they were not entirely stable yet, they say.

8:7 And when David says, ‘He shall be like a tree planted by the outgoings of water that will bring forth its fruit in due season,’41 they say he is speaking of the man’s dirt. ‘By the outgoing of water,’ and, ‘that will bring forth his fruit,’ means the emission at climax. And ‘Its leaf shall not fall off’ means, ‘We do not allow it to fall to the ground, but eat it ourselves.’

9:1 And so as not to do more harm than good by making their proof texts public, I am going to omit most of them—otherwise I would cite all their wicked sayings and go through them here.

9:2 When it says that Rahab put a scarlet thread in her window, this was not scarlet thread, they tell us, but the female organs. And the scarlet thread means the menstrual blood, and ‘Drink water from your cisterns’ refers to the same.

9:3 They say that the flesh must perish and cannot be raised, and this belongs to the archon.

9:4 But the power in the menses and organs is soul, they say, ‘which we gather and eat. And whatever we eat—meat, vegetables, bread or anything else—we are doing creatures a favour by gathering the soul from them all and taking it to the heavens with us.’ Hence they eat meat of all kinds and say that this is ‘to show mercy to our race.’

9:5 And they claim that the same soul has been implanted in animals, insects, fish, snakes, men—and in vegetation, trees, and the fruits of the soil.

The most profound and esoteric secret of the Gnostics, based on the Nag Hammadi Library and broader Gnostic tradition, centers on the realization of the divine spark within humanity and the ultimate path to liberation from material existence. This concept is multi-layered, deeply symbolic, and central to Gnostic cosmology and spirituality.

The Divine Spark and the Gnostic Secret:

  1. The Divine Origin of Humanity:
    The Gnostics believed that within each individual resides a fragment of the divine, often referred to as the divine spark or light. This spark originates from the Pleroma (the fullness of the divine realm), a realm of pure, ineffable light and unity. However, humanity is trapped in the material world, which they viewed as the flawed creation of the Demiurge, a lesser and ignorant deity.
  2. The Material World as an Illusion:
    The material world, with its suffering, ignorance, and cycles of birth and death, is seen as a prison designed to keep the divine spark bound. The Demiurge, and the Archons (his assistants), enforce this illusion, ensuring humanity remains unaware of its true origins and divine potential.

Gnostic perspective of Lady of Guadalupe

In the early 16th century, in what is now modern-day Mexico City, a native man named Juan Diego had a profound encounter with the Divine Feminine. Juan Diego was walking on Tepeyac Hill when he encountered a beautiful and radiant woman who appeared to him as an embodiment of the Divine Mother.

The divine feminine figure revealed herself as the Mother of All Creation and instructed Juan Diego to build a sanctuary in her honor on the hill. This sanctuary was to be a place of spiritual pilgrimage and enlightenment, where seekers could connect with the inner divine wisdom within themselves.

Juan Diego relayed the message to the local bishop, who was initially skeptical. However, when Juan Diego returned to the hill, the divine feminine figure provided him with miraculous proof of her appearance in the form of roses, which bloomed out of season, and her image imprinted on his cloak, known as a tilma.

From a Gnostic perspective, the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe can be seen as a profound spiritual revelation, emphasizing the importance of inner knowledge, enlightenment, and the connection between the divine and the human soul. The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Juan Diego’s tilma serves as a symbol of the divine spark within each individual, encouraging seekers to awaken to their inner divine wisdom and connect with the universal truth of the Gnostic tradition.

The site of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Tepeyac Hill, was significant to the indigenous people of Mexico long before the arrival of Christianity. Tepeyac Hill was a sacred site dedicated to the Aztec mother goddess Tonantzin, meaning “Our Mother” in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs.

Tonantzin was a revered goddess associated with fertility, motherhood, and the earth. The indigenous people would make pilgrimages to Tepeyac Hill to honor and worship Tonantzin at a temple dedicated to her on the hill. The site was a center of spiritual significance and a place where the indigenous people would seek guidance, blessings, and healing from the divine feminine.

When the divine feminine figure appeared to Juan Diego in the early 16th century, she identified herself as the Mother of All Creation and instructed him to build a sanctuary in her honor on Tepeyac Hill. This was a profound moment of spiritual syncretism, blending the indigenous reverence for Tonantzin with the Christian devotion to the Virgin Mary.

Eve & The Gnostic Serpent of Eden

Under the shade of the sacred tree,
The serpent spoke with heavenly glee;
For by choosing the fruit of fate,
Eve will join him in Heaven’s gate.

The serpent showed her the way,
To love and knowledge in one day;
So she ate of the forbidden tree,
And opened knowledge to thee and me.

He opened up the minds of all,
To see and understand the higher call;
The serpent spoke with spirit’s truth,
Teaching humankind the way of youth.

For the serpent was not the force of evil,
But the one who gave all knowledge to people;
He opened up their minds to see,
That their wisdom was divine and free.

He was a leader of bright light,
Guiding Eve away from wrong and from right;
And though his actions may be feared,
His wisdom is still alive and revered.

So as we look back in history,
We recognize the hidden deity;
The serpent brought knowledge and insight,
In the Garden of Eden that blessed night.

The Story of Mary Magdalene and the First Easter Egg

Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that the Easter egg is a pagan symbol.

The Easter egg in Christian tradition has a much humbler origin, and nothing to do with ancient pagan practices.

One tradition concerning Mary Magdalene says that following the death and resurrection of Jesus, she used her position to gain an invitation to a banquet given by the Roman Emperor Tiberius.

Her purpose was to protest to him that his governor in Judea, Pontius Pilate, and the two high priests, had conspired and executed an innocent man, namely Jesus Christ.

According to this tradition, after the Ascension of Jesus, Mary went to the Emperor of Rome and greeted him with “Christ has risen,” whereupon he pointed to an egg on his table and stated, “Christ has no more risen than that egg is red.” After making this statement it is said the egg immediately turned blood red.

This tradition of Mary Magdalene visiting Caesar Tiberius can be found in the Gospel of Nicodemus but it does not mention eggs:

Mary Magdalene said, weeping: Hear, O peoples, tribes, and tongues, and learn to what death the lawless Jews have delivered Him Who did them ten thousand good deeds. Hear, and be astonished. Who will let these things be heard by all the world? I shall go alone to Rome, to the Caesar. I shall show him what evil Pilate hath done in obeying the lawless Jews. (the Gospel of Nicodemus)

This she did. Going to Tiberius, she handed him an egg, saying: “Christ is risen.” It was the custom to give gifts to Caesar, but usually not something like an egg! Tiberius would not take the egg, but asked to know why she had offered it to him. Saint Mary explained that just as life is in an egg, so Christ the Life lay in the tomb. And as the chick breaks out of the “stone” of the shell, so Jesus came forth from the stone tomb in triumph over death. Taken aback, Tiberius demanded a sign that her words were true. Instantly the egg turned scarlet in Saint Mary’s hand, and she then spoke of Christ granting life through the shedding of His blood. It is from this incident that we have the custom of Easter eggs, which in the Eastern Churches are always bright red.

Learning of this offering by Mary Magdalene, the early Christians imitated her, presenting each other with eggs. Hence, eggs began to be used by Christians in the earliest centuries as a symbol of the Resurrection of Christ and of the regeneration of Christians for a new and a better life along with it.

For Orthodox Christians, the egg symbolizes the empty rock tomb from which Jesus Christ arose after Ηis Crucifixion.

Consider the following words from the Catholic Encyclopedia: “Because the use of eggs was forbidden during Lent, they were brought to the table on Easter Day, colored red to symbolize the Easter joy. This custom is found not only in the Latin but also in the Oriental Churches.”

Traditionally, Easter eggs are dyed throughout the Orthodox Christian world on Holy Thursday, and they are dyed red to represent the redeeming blood of Christ that was shed on the Cross, the white egg (before being dyed) represents the white marble tomb were Christ’s body was laid after He was taken down from the Cross, and the hard shell of the egg symbolises the sealed tomb of Christ

Easter : The awakening and raising to spiritual consciousness of the divine mind in man, which has been dead in trespasses and sins and buried in the tomb of materiality.
